So I recently shared this post for the Speak Now Event that strives to empower young women helping them achieve their goals. I wanted to share this here as well because it's a topic I'm truly passionate about.
One of the issues that the majority of teens face every day is self-image. Growing up, I can honestly say this was probably one of my biggest challenges and is a huge motivator behind why I started Eat Yourself Skinny. I never really felt comfortable in my own skin and was constantly comparing myself to famous actresses, models or even my closest girlfriends. Young, impressionable girls are constantly walking past countless magazines or coming across images online that glamorize size zero frames saying that THIS is what society considers beautiful. Ladies I promise you, this is just not true!
Every single woman is born a different size and shape and that is true beauty at its finest. Sure some of you may be naturally as thin as Miss Taylor Swift or you might rock some fabulous curves like Jennifer Hudson, but I can pretty much guarantee you everyone, no matter what size they are, finds faults in themselves. Just remember girls, YOU are your worst critic. Embrace your imperfections and realize it’s those things that make a person unique and beautiful. True beauty comes from within and nothing is more attractive than a confident girl with her head held high rockin’ a pair of stilettos.
Ok so flats are super cute too, but you get what I mean.
Society’s definition of beauty is completely skewed and magazines should be your go-to on the latest fashion trends, not to see who looks better. Even Jennifer Aniston has said she barely recognizes herself after a photo shoot. Girlfriend is airbrushed and edited like crazy! Hollywood’s standards of beauty are completely unattainable so don’t let yourself get wrapped up in them. If you want to lose weight, do it because YOU want to be healthy, not for those size 2 skinny jeans you bought yourself months ago in the hopes that you’d stop eating long enough to fit into them. I know I’ll never be a size 2 and probably won’t ever be a size 4, and I’m okay with that!
Find out where you feel the most healthy and happy with yourself and go from there. Eat foods that boost your metabolism such as grapefruit, apples and spinach (yes there was indeed a method to Popeye’s madness) and don’t forget to eat breakfast, it’s the most important meal of the day for a reason. Feel free to indulge in some whole wheat waffles with fresh fruit, your body will thank you! Also make sure to get at least 20 to 30 minutes of exercise in each day and drink lots of water. I promise, you’ll be surprised at how much better you feel.
Most of all, just love YOU.

Such an encouraging post for all women to read! It's true that we get caught up in comparing ourselves to others instead of recognizing that we are created to be ourselves. Thanks for sharing this! :)
Such a fabulous post!!! Thank you for this!!! This is something every girl needs to read :)
Well said!!! As crazy as it sounds, I never really became happy with my body until after I had a baby. Sure, my stomach isn't rock hard, and there are other issues I could pick on, but this is MY BODY! I used it to create this beautiful life, and even though I could probably stand to eat a few more salads and do a bit more cardio (or any at all) I am finally, finally at peace with my body the way it is.
Well said, Kelly. Love ya even more!
Well said, Kelly. Thanks for sharing.
this is so true! i love it.
ps: what font did you use for the "skinny" part in your header? it's so pretty.
So very true, and so very important. My daughter is getting to the age of reading magazines, and I already see the impact it has. Thanks for sharing!
i love this!! its so true to be honest with you i wish they would do a whole magazine post of women that are not airbrushed now that would boost sales and young womens confidence to know they are indeed just like us...
Great Post! I think all young girls should read this! :)

Great post. So important for others to read.
love this!
This is such a great message for women. I've felt that way growing up as well, feeling super uncomfortable with myself because I was always comparing myself to others. "Most of all, just love YOU." - best quote ever! :) -Mia
This is a beautiful post. I'm a new follower and I love your recipes (I made your whole wheat waffles for breakfast this morning!), it's nice to see such a positive message!
thank you for this post.
These thoughts have been on my mine too as well.
It made me happy to read this.
I loved this post Kelly!! This really hit home for me and I found what you said to be so inspiring. Thank you!!

What a GREAT post! Love the blog, by the way! (pretty cool sponsors too, I've added a few to my list.)
Thank you :) I sometimes have a really hard time looking at myself and wondering what could anybody possibly find beautiful without me putting on globs and blobs of make-up or without being skinny. I've given up the being skinny part and have decided that I'm just going to continue to get healthier. I'm so freakin' tired of what society thinks about me that I am going to start caring about what I think about me.
What a wonderful post!
I've struggled with weight-related confidence since I was 14, and I think everyone knows just how painful it is to look in the mirror and not be happy with the reflection. Your words are moving and inspirational, and I hope that girls (and heck some guys) realize the truth in them. If I had had your mentality when I was 14, it would have saved me a lot of trouble! Thanks for the beautiful post, Kelly :)
I love this, Kelly!! You are such an inspiration for girls/women of all ages! I am studying dietetics at my university to be a Registered Dietitian. As I am learning about how to care for other people's diets, I sometimes become really insecure about my own body, wondering why I don't look as thin as the models in magazines. Thanks for this reminder, girl! :)

Lovely words, Thanks! :-)
YOU, my friend, are beautiful inside and out! Thanks so much for this wonderful reminder. You're a great role model!
I love this! Thank you for the amzing post<3 Smile always:D
Loving it Kelly!!! You are so so sweet and this post is so full of everything Speak Now stands for- it seriously does my heart so much good to see that you are passionate about this topic.
Love you friend!
You made me cry! I needed this post right now. I was trying on bathing suits that I own for a trip to Vegas and I realized how horrible I look. I put on a little weight this past year and when I saw my first for the first time in a bathing suit I almost died. Your so right about self image. People say you look great, your healthy, blah blah, but I never listen to them. When we look at ourselves we don't see what others see, I don't get that. I must really need some new glasses.
You really don't know how much you saved me. I'm taking your advice and going to have a whole what waffle with some fruit for breakfast and go for a long walk or hike today.
Thank you again! Have a great rest of the weekend. Now to clean up these stupid tears, because I know that doesn't look good on me! :)
Awesome post!
Well Said!!!!!
Great post, I am 28 and yet am still terrible for comparing my size to my friends, especially if they are the same height as me!! Super message to remember :) xx
So true girl. Keep up the encouragement!!!
Amen! Such a great post! I admire you for you're honesty. I feel the same way.
Thanks so much for this. I'm going to repost on my blog Big Girls Gotta Eat! :)
What a wonderful post. It's nice to be reminded that every women is different and beautiful. I truly enjoy your blog and this made me love it even more :)
Thank you so much lovely lady. You are such a bright and shining example of beauty. I agree with you 100%. After struggling for 2 years with an eating disorder, I can truthfully say that being "beautiful" according to Hollywood is sadness. I have never felt happier than living a healthy lifestyle. Thanks for your rays of sunshine. :) xoxo
check out my blog sometime!

So true! Thank you for such wise words... more girls need to hear this.
This is a wonderful post - thank you so much. At almost 30 I need to remember this, but as a mom, I need to remember it more. Being a mom, to a daughter, is particularly challenging and important I think to "teach this." Thank you for sharing!
Ugh I totally needed to read this today. I have been struggling with my skin SO much lately and just feel so gosh darn ugly all the time because of it which is SO not me. I'm usually a really (but not overly) confident person so I can tell my skin issues are starting to take their toll on me so I'm glad I came across this post. :)
Thanks for the inspiration, love! <3
I struggle with my self-image daily, always have. Now that my daughter is 10, I see how important it is to truly love yourself from the inside out. Some of my comments in the early years of her life have really impacted her more than I knew. Its silly--she is a beautiful girl with a caring heart--that is what she should be judged on. I try everyday to think about myself in a positive manner and encourage her to do the same. Thank you for sharing.
love this post! "you are your worst critic" - must remember that!
Thank you for this awesome post :)
What a wonderful post, it was just what I needed to read! Thanks for always posting great blogs & yummy recipes! :)

fabulous post, kelly!!! I love your new header, did you hand draw skinny or is that a font?
Thank you so much for sharing this! I had issues with self image for a long time, but loving yourself for all the good and not-so-great is such a fantastic feeling.

This is such a wonderful post! It totally brightened my day. Healthy living is where it's at!
This was so well said, Kell. It's definitely a lesson I've had to learn in the past couple of years!
Love your new header! I changed everything our previous blog designer did on my blog too (;
Such a lovely post to read as a first time reader of your blog. So glad I stumbled through here - your recipes sound delicious too!
What a wonderful post. *sigh* Thank you.
Love your pup. Looks like my Lucy :)
Excellent post. Well said!
I think this is what initially threw me about your blog title, "Eat Yourself Skinny". And yet, as I've read your words and gotten to know you, I know that you really mean "Eat Yourself Healthy," because you truly embrace a healthy standpoint on food and self-love. I'm glad I read past the blog title, because you're truly an incredible woman. Love your food (and the text behind the sweet potatoes clean eating post! So true.)

Thanks a lot for your post. I have big problems feeling well in my skin. I often stop eating because of that. Thank you, I'm feeling a lot better reading your post and I feel somehow not that alone anymore.
Thank you a lot.
