Skinny Beer-garitas

You didn't think I was going to go a whole week sharing skinny Super Bowl appetizers and not give you a cocktail recipe, did you??

  Are you crazy?!

2

These beer-garitas are a staple at our summer parties and tailgates so why not have them during the Super Bowl??  I mean beer + margaritas = a pretty freakin' good time!  Plus considering it was literally 70 degrees out today, I figured they were completely appropriate.

A typical beer-garita is easily made with one can of limeade, 2 bottles of beer and a 1/2 cup of tequila.  But a skinny beer-garita is made using a bit more effort...but sooo worth the reward!

1

Making your own homemade limeade is super easy and saves you over 100 calories!  All you need are 3 limes, Splenda sugar blend and water...voila!  Simple as ever.  I thought about substituting the tequila for Skinny Girl margarita mix, but c'mon folks, it's the Super Bowl.  There shall be no skimping on the tequila, pretty sure that should be a rule.

Now I just want to note that a few studies have been done and it seems that alcohol may have a much faster effect on you when mixed with artificial sweeteners so please consider this when drinking these or any other diet-related mixers with your alcohol.  I tend to do this a lot so this is good to know!

I used MGD 64 brand beer to cut calories, but any Mexican beer would taste amazing if you don't mind the extra calories.  Next time I might try the lemonade flavor MGD 64 to give my beer-garita a lemon-lime flavor.  Who knows, might be an epic combination!

Here are your ingredients:

2 cups frozen limeade (recipe below)
2 bottles of light beer
1/2 cup tequila

Limeade:

1 cup fresh lime juice + 2 limes for zesting
1 1/2 cups of water
1/2 cup Splenda sugar blend

To make the limeade:
Zest two limes.  In a large saucepan, combine water, Splenda and lime zest and heat until Splenda is completely dissolved.  Remove from heat and allow to cool at room temperature.  Stir in lime juice and freeze your limeade concentrate until ready to use.

To make the beer-garitas:
In a pitcher, combine frozen limeade, 2 beers and 1/2 cup of tequila.  Place pitcher in the freezer overnight until frozen through, then mix so that it is in slushy form and serve.  Enjoy!

These sound good!!! Luckily, I'm not a fan of high calorie cocktails. The ones I like tend to be the ones that are a little lower! They also look yummy!!!

Looks great! I had a C*r&^a-rita once (unnamed Mexican Beer ;) and loved it but I hate the fake margarita mix..blech!! I make mine with stevia, lime juice and water. Other than that mine is pretty much like yours! Good stuff, I love them!

Are you sure about the point values here? half a cup (4 oz) of tequila is about 10PP and MDG 64 are 2 points per bottle...the alcohol alone is 14 points, that would be over 3 PP in alcohol alone if this makes 4 servings...

Kelly | Eat Yourself Skinny said...

Yes Ariana, you are correct! Based on the old points system this is about 4 points per drink, however based on the fat, carbs, fiber and protein the Points plus value is 1. I get confused all the time as to why they don't calculate calories so that's why I put both! :)

Kelly, this look awesome. I can't wait till Sunday, I am making these today. It is a gorgeous day in Florida, I am not sure I can wait for them to freeze overnight, may have to sneak a taste tonight.

oh my eff! I am loving this already. In Texas some bars serve a big a$$ margarita with a long neck mexican beer dumped in. There is no excuse, but I've never tried it. I LOVE beer and I love margs, so this is like you said ...epic. I can't wait to test this out!!

Kelly these look delicious... and I have a small love affair with margaritas as well so this is perfect. I am not so much for using fake sugar but I am sure this would be just as excellent with raw turbano so I have to try it out!!!
Beautiful pic's too! Nicely done.

We drink lots of margaritas in our house, so I'm extra happy to see a SKINNY rita! Extra effort sounds worth it to me! YUM

That MGD 64 Lemonade sounded like a good idea when I bought it at the store, but it was so nasty. I do not recommend it at all. I'm sure it would ruin what sounds like a delicious recipe!

Love this! My favorite drink is a michelada which is like a beer bloody mary. Now I need to get to work at making it skinny!

I have been thinking of trying a simple syrup using Splenda, but assumed it would be a disaster! I am super jazzed you made these! In our house, we love all things citrus.
I can't wait to try these, but admittedly, will wait until we are somewhere over freezing again here :)
Thanks for the new take on a favorite drink!

Lisa said...

Mmm! This sounds great! I'm a beer lover and don't really like mixed drinks, but I could do this!

Ariana said...

True! I hate that that you can't calculate alcohol by the usual fat, carb, fiber, protein formula! Broke my heart once i realized my beloved Michelob Ultras weren't just one point!

Corey said...

So... just to be clear (cause it seems to be too good to be true) there are 231 calories in 24oz of this deliciousness? Total? Or 231 calories in one serving (6oz)?

Becca said...

I just built these in the recipe builder on the WW site. They are 7 Points+ per drink. Which is still better than a regular margarita!

katie said...

Trying this out tonight for National Margarita Day! Thanks!

abbylea3 said...

I was wondering about the nutrition. Is it 231 cal for 1 6 oz margarita?

Kelly | Eat Yourself Skinny said...

Yes it is :) That's my Fitness Pal said when I plugged in everything, 231 cals for a 6 oz. serving

Heather H said...

I know this is an older post I'm commenting on...but I am so jazzed to try these! They remind me of my favorite French drink, Desperados (tequila flavored beer...no idea why it's French, but it is and it's seemingly impossible to come by in the States). Thanks!

Cannot wait to try these! Just found on pintrest and I'm obsessing!

I have to try this :) Something I've missed for ages.

I bet this would work out if you poured your mixture in ice cube trays, freeze, Then when you are ready, put it in the blender?!

I love this recipe!! I've been making these for years, with only slight variation. We use limeade, one can of beer, fill the limeade container with tequila, and fill the limeade container with Sprite Zero, too. It's always the best and always requested! It's so fool proof, too. Next time I make it, I'm going to try to make my own limeade!! Thanks for the idea and sharing this fabulous cocktail! :) I love your blog!

jessie said...

I'm thinking that if you didn't want to wait for the limeade to freeze, you could put it in the blender with a few frozen strawberries to make a quick frozen drink! Strawberry beer-garitas!

Lisa Vallin said...

I'm so excited to try this for my Pinterest party next weekend! I might make a batch before the party, I'm not sure I can't wait another week.
