Ok! So here is my very first post with my new camera! Now keep in mind, I had a pretty busy weekend so I wasn't able to do all the practicing I wanted to do AND we had thunderstorms tonight so I didn't have any good natural light.
Sigh...
Regardless, I did the best I could with the little experience I had and voila! It may not be Foodgawker worthy but it's much better than my trusty little iPhone!
I'm not a fan of the yellowish/orange hue it gives off, but after 75081387509 tries I realized the boyfriend was hungry and dinner was getting cold.
I also tried another photo subject and this was the result...
He could really use a haircut, but isn't he just so cute??
Ok back to the food. I got this recipe from my Cooking Light magazine (June 2011 issue) and fell in love with the ingredients right away. What could be better than peaches, white wine and honey?! Ok...so there are many things just as good, but trust me it was a tasty combination! This dish gave a very fresh taste and was super quick to make. Unfortunately the store didn't have any fresh thyme so I substituted some rosemary I had at home, but I'm going to give you the recipe using thyme because I think it will taste MUCH better! Pair this with some couscous or some roasted red potatoes and you'll have a new favorite dinner!

Nicely done darlin girl!! Your pup is adorable. I think those chops look great!
Aww thanks Mindy, you are a sweetheart! I'm still not happy at all with this picture, but the porkchops were too good not to post! Practice makes perfect! :)
I love sweet & savory, that recipe looks great! and your dog is adorable :)
Your pup is so cute! Congrats on the new camera :)
That dog is so cute ... hey when you find out how to take good photos please share ... no matter what I do mine are never great ... true I'm always in a rush, but ... back to your pork chops, what an original idea to add sauteed peaches, they must be really full tasty. What a great combination of ingredients!
Pork and peaches... mmmmm.. an interesting combination. I am trying to imagine it, and I think it should taste great! I will give it a try when the peaches are in season. I also love that yellowish color - so happy :-)
The pork chops definitely do look delicious, I love the flavor combos. Awesome shot of your dog with his front leg up, so cute!!
I LOVE Cooking Light - I have this on my list to try eventually! Sounds delicious!
Lol, very funny about the odd colored photos. That happens to me all the time!
Pork chops with anything are delicious :-)
Your puppy is adorable! Do you edit your photos at all? I use picnik (free)--not always, just when I get time or think a picture really needs it. Sometimes "autofix" is all it takes to get the colors closer to where they should be. But I'm FAR from being a photo expert. Regardless, that pork looks awesome.
That looks super yummy! Um and your dog is too cute. Im with you girl, I'm struggling to learn my new DSLR too. We'll stumble along together. =)
Sounds delicious. Your dog is so cute
Now this recipe is calling my name. I love the flavor profiles.
I do love the sound of that recipe. Wow! Thanks for sharing it.
Regarding your pictures, the yellow hue is from the lights in the house, not the camera. The picture of your adorable Yorkie was done in sunlight, right? That's why it's not yellow. One of the things "they" say is to try and take pictures using natural sunlight when possible. If you have to use artificial light, get those squiggly energy-saving bulbs. Otherwise, the picture is fantastic.
Mmmm dinner looks delicious! And your puppy is so stinkin' cute! :)
The chops look great and your puppy is just adorable. We had to go for the big sturdy kind of dog over here because the kids would smush a little one, but someday I will get a tiny pup!
Thanks for your sweet comments on my blog. http://ithappensatdinner.blogspot.com
Let's get the most important bit out of the way first: WHAT AN ADORABLE DOGGIE!!! Who's cute? Who??
Anyway, I'm definitely trying this recipe! I'm not the biggest fan of pork though, and I hope this'll go well with chicken, too.
Awwww your puppy is sooo darn cute!! No need for a haircut! :) The chops sound amazing... I love the inclusion of peaches.
You can go to Photoshop and start using their free photo editing program...you'll be able to fix those yellows/blues and add some sharpness to the photo.
Congrats on your new camera Kelly! And I love the idea of pairing peaches and meat (I'd use veggie meat... lol) :D
Hi Kelly! Congrats on getting a new camera! Your doggie is super super cute. I wish I have one for myself... Anyway your dinner looks fabulous! Peach and pork chops with thymes. I can imagine the taste. Looks and sounds good!!
Looks super good, I never cook pork but that might have to change. Love your blog!
Pork chops pair so well with sweet, succulent fruit. Looks delicious!! What a cute pup too!! :)
Your puppy is adorable and yay for the new camera! I know how lovely it is to FINALLY get a good one! All the best!
Kelly this looks wonderful! I have never put fruit with my pork chops, but it looks like I am going to try.
Congrats on the new camera! Pics look great to me - I use my dogs as subjects all the time, they're great for practice and I even get some really funny and cute pictures in the process! =) These pork chops sound to die for... quite jealous I don't have them in front of me right now!
Cannot wait to hear more about camera adventures. I am asking/begging for one on my birthday too. I have four more months :(
I love pairing pork with fruit. The meat has such a mild flavor that the fruit really brings out the flavors. I've tried it with apples, but never peaches. Great idea!
Your Yorkie is adorable! I have one too. My Hershi is 2 1/2 and though he is all boy he love to wear his cute little Key West shirt. I wrote a post about him titled Hershi, check it out. Thanks for becoming a follower now I am one of yours as well. Great blog.
Your dog is so cute! Great recipe!
I have the same issue with my DSLR! Let me know if you figure out how to get rid of that yellow sheen :) This dish looks SO good! Love the sweet 'n savory combo.
1 this recipe looks amazing
2 get back here and post more recipes you are soooo goood!
Hi Kelly!
As always, looks amazing. I remember you mentioning that you were switching to wordpress, is that correct? I am working through a similar transition. Would love to hear how you are doing with it. My email is kimberly@learntocookbadgergirl.com.
And in light of that transition, here is the link to the new domain: learntocookbadgergirl.com.
I wasn't able to transfer my followers so I would love if you followed me again in the new place.
Take care!
Kimberly
First of all, a belated Happy Birthday and congrats on the new gear.
I've read through the comments and it looks like you're not the only one stumped by the color hue problem.
I'm not expert, but I'll tell you that the comment about the light in the house being the problem is spot on. Although it's not a problem, it's the need for an adjustment, which you can get with your shiny new camera.
Sure, postproduction editing is something we all do, but I try so hard to get it as good as I can straight out of the camera (SOOC) so that I don't have to futz with editing.
Your camera can be adjusted for White Balance. I have a Nikon as well, although a different model, but the functionality (button and menus) is probably pretty similar.
You'll hate me for this but, get out your manual or get online and search for your manual.
And while you're convincing yourself to take on this laborious chore, try this:
If there's an info button on the back of the camera great. Then, look around the back and see if there is a WB button. If you see both, do this:
Press the info button and then the WB button. On the top right there should be a dial. There may be 2 dials. On my model (the D90), the dial on the side closest to me is the one I spin to set the White Balance.
Hold the WB button and spin the dial and you'll see a variety of options. If you're shooting inside, determine what kind of lighting you are under. In the kitchen I have high hats with the new CFL bulbs which are florescents and they're all over the ceiling. The range hood has two halogen bulbs which is a warmer light
Of course, if there's any daylight, I head straight to a window.
Take a look at your WB options and pick the one that relates to your lighting. You should see numerous options.
Metering and focus are something else to check into. If I had to guess, you’re not picking the correct focus area. Again, your manual is your best friend! ☺
And finally, because you're probably hating me right about now for the lecture is that you may want to check out the Washington Photo Safari website. They offer photo safaris all over town and it is SO worth the money to go with a small group and an incredible professional for photography help. I went on one Safari and it was so worth it!
Anyway, I hope this helps and doesn't come across as a negative. You've got a great piece of equipment and a little time with it and you'll be shooting photos without a yellow tint in no time! :)
I don't have many shots up on ThinRecipes[dot]com yet. There are more to look at on the Frantasticfood[dot]com site and if you go waay back, you'll see a big difference in the quality. I posted some dismal shots. Some of it is the variety of cameras I've been using over the past 4 years, but most is lighting, focus, depth of field and PRACTICE. Tens of thousands of photos. No lie! ☺
And finally, Nikon offers classes. They go around the country and I don't remember when one is coming to the DC area, but when it does I think I'll go.
Cheers!
Fran
Kelly,
you had looked at my blog before (www.cookingwithcourt.blogspot.com) so I decided to check yours out... so cute!!! I love that you are doing weight watchers... me too!!! It's the only way I can cook as much as I do and not be enormous. Looking forward to reading more of your blog!
Love your pork chops! :D Congrats on the new camera. And your doggie is just too cute!
Hi Kelly! What an amazing combination; pork chops and peaches. Mmmm. You always put on a fabulous meal. And your Gold Cup is beautiful. Bravo, Kelly!
Happy Birthday and congrats on the new camera. I recognise the hungry husband/dinner getting cold scenario as each dish gets photographed before it lands on the table - bless them for their patience!
Lovely photos - especially your little dog. Fran is right about using White Balance (WB) to correct the yellowish cast you mention when shooting indoors. Submitting photos to foodgawker is a good way to find out what the issues are. I first heard about WB from a rejection I got from them.
Your Yorkie is ADORABLE. My eyes skimmed right over the delicious looking food (but I went back and looked a second time!) and went right to your pup. I have two medium sized dogs and a year ago I got a little Maltese and completely and totally lost my heart. I am hooked...little dogs are the best!
great recipe, cute Yorkie!
Oh, my. This is fabulous! Thank you for a delicious meal!
Made this tonight for dinner and all I can say is YUM-MY! Sooo tasty
